Frequently asked questions

Who is Dr Wheatgrass?

"Dr Wheatgrass" doesn't actually exist as a person. It is our trademarked brand. Dr Wheatgrass is Dr. Chris Reynolds, a general practitioner.

Dr. Chris developed the wheatgrass extract that forms the main ingredient of our products. He has used the extract successfully in clinical trials and in thousands of patients since 1995. He has re-discovered the therapeutic power of wheatgrass that first came to light in modern times in the 1930's. Leading the resurgence of wheatgrass healing around the world, his life's mission is to make his wheatgrass extract available and affordable worldwide.

Where can I buy Dr Wheatgrass products?

They can be purchased from our website.

Please give me a brief history of wheatgrass healing.

The history of wheatgrass healing goes back thousands of years.

More recently, in the 1930's in the United States there was substantial scientific research into the 'Grass Juice Factor' and other therapeutic and nutritional properties of cereal grasses. Because of its apparent ability to stimulate production of human growth factors, this discovery could revolutionise many aspects of medical treatment and enhance our understanding of the body's immune system and natural healing processes.

In the 1970's, Ann Wigmore started the wheatgrass juicing craze in the United States which ultimately led to a huge, nutrition-based industry which continues to grow worldwide.

Wheatgrass For Growth And Fertility
In the 1930's an American agricultural chemist, Dr. Charles F Schnabel noted that ailing hens fed fresh, young wheatgrass recovered quickly, grew faster and fertility doubled compared with healthy hens fed standard diets. This discovery was the impetus for what became a lifetime of research into the reason for this amazing result. Joined by others, such as biochemist George Kohler, his passion inspired a body of scientific research that continues today. Other pioneers such as Japanese pharmacist, Dr Yoshihide Hagiwara have proven wheatgrass to be of major therapeutic significance.

The Grass Juice Factor & Chlorophyll
It is possible that research chemists have identified all the known biologically active substances in wheatgrass except for the elusive 'Grass Juice Factor' which remains a mystery to this day. Clinical and research evidence has revealed the 'Grass Juice Factor' to have, probably by the stimulation of human growth factors, a powerful effect on the regeneration of damaged skin and the body in general.

In the American Journal of Surgery in 1940, Benjamin Cruskin, M.D., recommends chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll: to clear up foul-smelling odours, neutralize strep infections, heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, overcome ear inflammation and infections, reduce varicose veins and heal leg ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many cases.

Most of these observations have been repeated numerous times by Dr. Chris Reynolds, an Australian general practitioner.

The Importance of the Pre-Jointing Phase
Even though the exact nature of the Grass Juice factor remains undetermined, some of its properties can be linked to the precise timing of the wheatgrass sprout growth. For only a few days, early in its growth cycle, wheatgrass develops an amazing build-up of nutrient and therapeutic power. This happens just at the time when the young wheatgrass sprout splits to begin forming the wheat seed - the pre-jointing phase. At this crucial moment there exists a peak concentration of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and the all-powerful Grass Juice Factor. Dr Wheatgrass products harness the power of the Grass Juice Factor at this time to create its Wheatgrass Extract. A time when its nutritional and healing powers are best for your skin and your body.

What research is available on the therapeutic effects of wheatgrass?

A large body of medical and scientific research regarding the therapeutic benefits of wheatgrass and other cereal grasses has accumulated since the early 1930's. (View journal abstracts)

If you search under "Chlorophyll" and "Chlorophyllin" you will find numerous studies and reports. However, as Dr. Chris says, "Chlorophyll is highly unlikely to have any biological activity in humans. It's more likely the Grass Juice Factor that does the work."

Science doesn't seem to have registered that fact and continues researching chlorophyll to see what makes it tick. According to Dr. Chris, it doesn't!

How is wheatgrass extract made?

Our extract is derived from freshly cut, organically grown wheatgrass sprouts. We then use a secret process that enables almost 100% retention of bioactives resulting in a stable extract that lasts for many years. The process takes about three months under strictly controlled conditions.

Human Genome Project associated technology has been used to guarantee efficacy and stability.

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

The secret to taking wheatgrass

There is no doubt that wheatgrass contains numerous important health-giving bioactives. Clinical observation shows how rapidly many of them are absorbed through the skin and the mucous membrane covering the oral cavity.

One example of the latter is the "rush" many experience only a few seconds after swallowing fresh wheatgrass juice or the Supershots. This suggests instantaneous absorption directly from the mouth to the brain via the blood circulation i.e. the sublingual route.

Herein lies the secret of taking wheatgrass in any form - tablets or powder mixed with water, fresh juice or Supershots. That is, hold the liquid in your mouth for two or three minutes if possible before swallowing. This will enable much greater absorption of the bioactives compared with simply tossing it down your throat. If you do that, much of the goodness will be destroyed by stomach acid.

For many, including myself, the taste and smell of fresh wheatgrass juice is sufficient a deterrent to continue taking it. Also, the antioxidant concentration in fresh juice is about 25% lower than in the extract we use to make our Supershots, which are also very easy on the palate. Wheatgrass powder and tablets contain even lower amounts.

Whatever form of wheatgrass you take, it will almost certainly help your general health and wellbeing in time.

What is in Dr Wheatgrass Supershots?

Dr Wheatgrass Supershots contain a natural, specially formulated antioxidant-rich extract derived from organically grown fresh wheatgrass sprouts. Supershots contain only natural ingredients and no artificial flavouring.

What is thalassaemia and what can wheatgrass do for the condition?

Thalassaemia is an inherited condition that results in the production of abnormal hemoglobin, the molecules in the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body. These patients often require lifelong, usually monthly, blood transfusions and drugs to remove iron from the body. There are millions of sufferers worldwide.

Wheatgrass has been shown to increase the "transfusion gap", the time between transfusions in some of these patients. Please go to Dr. Reynolds' Newsletter page for several articles on this topic.

Is Dr Wheatgrass supporting medical research?

Yes, in a number of different areas.

Thalassemia

Thalassemic patients suffer from an inherited blood disorder that adversely affects the structure of hemoglobin, the molecule responsible for carrying oxygen around the body. There are a number of different types of this disorder and many patients require regular blood transfusions, often every three or four weeks, throughout their lives.

In 2005, scientists at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia discovered that the wheatgrass extract used in Dr Wheatgrass Supershots contains an as yet unidentified biologically active substance that strongly enhances the production of foetal haemoglobin in human clone cells (More information). This could lead to reduction of blood transfusion requirements in thalassaemic patients constituting a significant medical breakthrough.

Dr Wheatgrass is proud to have played an important role in this research and for giving financial support to the Institute.

Leprosy Ulcers

Even though they have been treated and "cured" of leprosy by medication, leprosy patients frequently develop skin ulcers, usually on the feet, which can become indolent and don't heal. Some ulcers persist for more than 30 years. To date, no effective medical treatment has been found to heal these ulcers.

By chance, in 2008, we discovered that our Skin Recovery Spray almost healed two ulcers in one of these patients. Subsequently, we funded and and supervised a clinical pilot study using the wheatgrass spray in Indore, India. Preliminary results showed more than 60% of leprous ulcers healed in these patients with significant healing in approximately 80 percent - a remarkable result. Details of the study will be available in 2010.

Skin Toxicity From Radiation in Breast Cancer Patients

Deep X-ray therapy for the treatment of breast cancer can be fraught with complications and adverse reactions called "skin toxicity". Essentially, this means that after treatment, the skin becomes inflamed, tends to blister and break down leading to pain, difficulty in management and wound infection. Because of skin toxicity, the patient has to wait much longer between treatments for the skin to recover sufficiently to allow the next treatment. This in turn tends to reduce the patient's chances of recovery.

For over 100 years the inability to successfully manage skin toxicity has been a major management issue, and to date, nothing has been found that can significantly reduce it. Many topical substances have been trialled and tested over the years, but to no avail.

In this controlled, double-blind study performed at the School of Clinical Sciences, Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, 29 breast cancer patients applied either sorbolene (current best practice) or a commercially produced wheatgrass-based cream (Dr Wheatgrass Antioxidant Skin Recovery Cream) to the irradiated area three times a day from commencement of radiotherapy.

The researchers determined that "the wheatgrass extract delays the severity of acute radiation skin toxicity" and, on the basis of their results, recommended "a larger multicentre randomised trial."

Can you take too much wheatgrass?

Some people may develop mild nausea and/or diarrhea if they drink too much wheatgrass juice or Supershots. It is best to keep to the recommended daily 5ml dosage of Supershots.

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

How do Dr Wheatgrass Supershots differ from fresh wheatgrass juice?

There are two main differences.

First, the wheatgrass sprout extract we use contains much higher levels of antioxidants compared with freshly juiced wheatgrass.

Secondly, juicing does not extract all bioactive material from the wheatgrass leaves. A significant amount remains in the fibre which does not get absorbed into the body. By comparison our extraction process, which takes several months, yields almost 100% return of bioactives.

There are other differences. For example the stability of Supershots compared with fresh juice enables you to take your daily wheatgrass "shot" any time and any place. It is ideal for the traveller or shift-worker and many others who do not have access to a juice bar or are unable to cultivate their own grass.

Supershots are shelf-stable for at least two years at room temperature. Fresh wheatgrass juice only lasts a few days if refrigerated.

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

How much of the Supershots should I take?

One teaspoonful for adults every second day.

I have an allergy to wheat, is wheatgrass safe for me to use?

In most cases, yes.

Wheat allergies are usually due to gluten which comes from the actual wheat seed. Our wheatgrass extract is produced from young, vital wheatgrass sprouts before the new wheat seed is formed. Therefore, Dr Wheatgrass Supershots contain no gluten.

Please note: If you are concerned about wheat allergies, we recommend you consult your doctor/allergist or nutritional consultant before adding anything new to your diet, including Dr Wheatgrass Supershots.

Do Supershots deliver the same health benefits as fresh wheatgrass juice?

Yes, but for different reasons. The most important component in wheatgrass is most likely the 'Grass Juice Factor'. This factor is probably composed of many different molecules that can significantly boost the body's immune system. It also appears to stimulate production of growth factors essential for healing and good health.

We also know that our extract contains around 25% more antioxidants than an equivalent amount of freshly juiced wheatgrass.

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

Doesn't wheatgrass have to be consumed fresh in order to maximise its nutritional benefits?

No, not at all.

Much of wheatgrass marketing attributes the health-giving properties of wheatgrass juice to its nutritional content and chlorophyll. However, without understating the nutritional benefits, my view differs considerably.

Some years ago, I discovered that chlorophyll most likely has little or no biological activity in humans. Most likely the 'Grass Juice Factor' in wheatgrass, which is known to be a potent growth and fertility factor, activates growth factors that results in stronger immunity and rapid healing rates. This Factor, unlike chlorophyll, is vital and durable which is why Dr Wheatgrass Supershots can remain biologically effective for two years and longer - without chlorophyll.

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

Who can benefit from consuming Dr Wheatgrass Supershots?

In a word, everyone - and animals too.

Wheatgrass is a potent immunostimulant. Having a strong immune system helps ward off illness and disease. Many people who have taken wheatgrass in one form or another regularly report increased energy and stamina, clearer mental focus, fewer colds and better weight control.

Why aren't Supershots green?

Supershots are made from a highly concentrated extract derived from young wheatgrass sprouts. This extract is a deep brown colour. Its bioactivity is considerably higher than that of fresh wheatgrass juice, partly because antioxidant levels are 25 percent higher in the extract.

Is it safe to take Supershots during pregnancy, breastfeeding and trying to conceive?

Yes.

Wheatgrass sprouts generate the wheat used for making bread. The wheatgrass extract in Supershots is therefore essentially a food.

Supershots are also safe for children and the elderly.

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

How effective are Dr Wheatgrass products?

The more you read about wheatgrass on these pages e.g. Testimonials, Newsletters, Conditions, Healing Tips etc. the more you will realise that wheatgrass has a very broad spectrum of therapeutic activity. As with all remedies, effectiveness varies from one person to another, but wheatgrass frequently works when nothing else does. And remember, a little goes a long way. Don't waste it!

Note: For maximum benefit, it is important to take wheatgrass properly.

What are the storage requirements for Supershots?

Although Dr Wheatgrass Supershots are stable and long-lasting, once the bottle is opened, it is preferable, particularly in warm climates, to keep them in the refrigerator.

Why do Supershots taste so different to fresh wheatgrass juice?

Many people do not tolerate the odour and taste of fresh wheatgrass juice well. We have found a way to neutralise this problem but still retain full biological activity in Supershots. This is why they have a pleasant taste and barely detectable odour. They are well received by all ages including young children.

Can I use the wheatgrass products on my face as a moisturiser? If so, which one?

You certainly can. All Dr Wheatgrass antioxidant skin products contain wheatgrass extract which can have a positive regenerative effect on the skin. You can expect smoother, softer and healthier skin if you persevere with wheatgrass. Responses vary so it is best to try any individual product and/or combinations of them to find the best formulation for your skin.

Taking Dr Wheatgrass Supershots daily can also enhance skin and hair quality.

Can elite athletes subject to regular drug testing use Superbalm for injuries such as tendinitis?

Certainly. The wheatgrass extract we use in Superbalm is essentially a staple food. It contains nothing that could cause concern during drug testing, whether ingested or applied to the skin.

Does taking wheatgrass interact with Warfarin?

Theoretically, the Vitamin K in fresh wheatgrass juice could interact with warfarin. I have never heard of anyone, including my own patients, who ever had a change in their coagulation profile (blood tests) by taking wheatgrass regularly.

In fact, when these patients bruise, applying any of the Dr Wheatgrass topicals to the overlying skin can quickly reduce swelling, bleeding and skin discoloration.

Doesn't wheatgrass contain gluten?

The extract we use is derived from young, vital wheatgrass sprouts.

Only the wheat seed contains gluten, and this does not form until after the sprouts have been cut for wheatgrass extract production. Laboratory tests show there is no gluten in the extract.

Dr Wheatgrass Skin Recovery Cream heals wounds quickly. Does it contain arnica?

No, we use only wheatgrass extract to make our products. They contain no other biologically active additives.

Is Supershots halal - Meaning containing no alcohol or animal by products?

Although glycerol is one type of many alcohols used in a myriad of products, including Supershots, it is not the alcohol used in the production of alcoholic beverages (ethanol). We use a natural, organic preservative instead.

The glycerol we use is vegetable based and contains no animal products.

Most of the anal fissure testimonials talk about Skin Recovery Cream. Wouldn't Superbalm be better if it's stronger?

Yes. Because it contains about 300% more wheatgrass extract than Skin Recovery Cream, given the painful nature of fissure, I always recommend Superbalm for this condition.

The reason so many testimonials relate to Skin Recovery Cream is because this product was available several years before Superbalm.
